Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum art heist (1990)

In the early morning of March 18, 1990, two thieves disguised as police officers entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole 13 works of art, including paintings by Vermeer and Rembrandt. The stolen pieces have not been recovered and the case remains the largest unsolved art theft in U.S. history. The museum preserves empty frames where works hung and continues to offer a reward while cooperating with law enforcement and independent investigators.
