Big Horn Academy Building

The Big Horn Academy Building, constructed in 1916 in Cowley, Wyoming, is a historic site that originally served as a high school and junior college for the Bighorn Basin. Established by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1907, it was intended to rotate locations but ultimately remained in Cowley, leading to the construction of a permanent structure. The building features distinctive rusticated sandstone and operated as a church school until 1924 when it became part of the public school system. A gymnasium was added in 1936 through the Works Progress Administration. After ceasing school operations in 1985, the building served various purposes, including a preschool and small businesses, before being remodeled in 2011 to house the administrative offices for Big Horn County School District #1. This site offers a glimpse into the educational history of the region and the architectural heritage of early 20th-century Wyoming.
