Nuyorican Poets Cafe

The Nuyorican Poets Cafe was founded by Miguel Algarín in 1973 as a poetry workshop and evolved into a performance venue and cultural center in Manhattan's East Village. It became a central venue for the Nuyorican literary and spoken-word movement, hosting poets, playwrights, musicians, and experimental theater. The cafe continues to present regular poetry readings, slam competitions, and community arts programming that highlight Puerto Rican and New York City–based voices.
