Roger Mowry Tavern

The Roger Mowry Tavern, built around 1653 in Providence, Rhode Island, was a significant historic stone ender house that served as the town's only tavern, a government meeting place, church, and jail. Roger Mowry, the tavernkeeper and constable, played a vital role in the community until his death in 1666. The tavern was known for its involvement in local civil matters and was a site of notable events, including a rally for a prisoner’s release and a murder investigation. Although it was restored in the late 19th century, the tavern was demolished in 1900, making it the oldest house in Providence at the time of its destruction. Today, it stands as a testament to early American history and the social dynamics of colonial Rhode Island.
