Vinland Estate

Vinland Estate, located in Newport, Rhode Island, was constructed in 1882 for tobacco heiress Catharine Lorillard Wolfe and showcases a striking Romanesque Revival style with red sandstone and Aesthetic Movement elements. Inspired by Norse history and Longfellow's poetry, the estate features intricate carvings and a Roman Dolium at the entrance. After being sold to railroad tycoon Hamilton McKown Twombly, the estate underwent significant expansions and renovations. In 1955, it was donated to Salve Regina University, which now utilizes several buildings from the estate for educational purposes, including McAuley Hall, Angelus Hall, and others, making it a unique blend of history and academia.
