Cedar Park (Galesville, Maryland)

Cedar Park is a historic home located in Galesville, Maryland, originally built in 1702. It features a unique post-in-the-ground construction and is notable for being the earliest surviving earthfast dwelling in Maryland and Virginia. The house has undergone several modifications, including a significant transformation in 1736, resulting in the brick structure seen today. The property also includes a mid-19th century frame tenant house, which served as slave quarters. Cedar Park is historically significant as the birthplace of Founding Father John Francis Mercer and was home to 'Miss Mercer's School,' an academy for young women run by his daughter from 1825 to 1834. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers.
