San Francisco Cable Car Museum

The San Francisco Cable Car Museum is housed in the Washington-Mason powerhouse and car barn and displays historic cable cars and the winding machinery that powers the city's cable car lines. The museum's exhibits include retired vehicles and the large 1890s-era winding wheels and sheaves that are still part of the system. Admission to the museum is free and it interprets the history of the cable car as a functioning transit and tourist attraction.
