Lewis and Harriet Hayden House - documented Underground Railroad safe house

The Lewis and Harriet Hayden House at 66 Phillips Street in Beacon Hill was the home of abolitionist Lewis Hayden and is documented as having sheltered freedom seekers and operated as a station on the Underground Railroad. Hayden, a formerly enslaved person who became a civic leader in Boston, used his home and resources to assist escaped enslaved people and to support abolitionist causes. The house is a recognized stop on Boston's Black Heritage Trail and is interpreted for its role in 19th-century African American history.
