200 Clarendon (John Hancock Tower, minimalist glass skyscraper)

200 Clarendon Street, commonly called the John Hancock Tower and designed by Henry N. Cobb of I. M. Pei & Partners, was completed in 1976 and at 790 feet is New England's tallest building. The tower's minimalist reflective glass facade and simple parallelogram plan dramatically altered the Copley Square skyline. During construction and shortly after completion the building experienced a widely reported failure of glass panes that were subsequently replaced; the tower remains noted for the contrast it creates with adjacent historic Trinity Church.
