The Southern Railway headquarters in Chennai is an impressive Indo-Saracenic architectural marvel built in 1921. Located near Chennai Central on Poonamallee High Road, this historic building originally served as the headquarters for the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company. Designed by architect N. Grayson, it showcases a blend of classical and Dravidian styles, constructed using reinforced concrete for the first time in India. The structure features a central bay with two wings surrounding a lush courtyard, designed to enhance airflow with large windows. Inaugurated in 1922, it stands as a significant heritage site, reflecting the rich railway history of the region.
