Lawrenceville Correctional Center

The Lawrenceville Correctional Center, located in Brunswick County, Virginia, is a medium-security prison for men that has housed up to 1555 inmates. Opened in 1998, it was the first private prison in Virginia and was initially managed by Corrections Corporation of America. From 2003 until 2024, it was operated by GEO Group under a contract with the Virginia Department of Corrections, before the state took over management in August 2024. This facility represents a significant aspect of Virginia's correctional history and the evolution of private versus state-operated prisons.
