Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse

The Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse, built in 1908 in Jersey City, New Jersey, played a crucial role in powering the subway system connecting New Jersey and New York. Under the leadership of William Gibbs McAdoo, it facilitated the operations of the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad, which later became known as PATH. Although closed in 1929 and repurposed for storage, the powerhouse was recognized as one of New Jersey's most endangered historic sites in the 1990s and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Located near the revitalizing Harborside Financial Center, the site is a testament to early 20th-century engineering and architecture, with ongoing efforts to preserve its legacy despite the loss of its iconic smokestacks.
