George Washington Memorial Building

The George Washington Memorial Building, envisioned as a National University in honor of George Washington, was initiated by the George Washington Memorial Association in 1897. Despite initial support from Congress and notable figures, the project faced financial challenges and ultimately did not materialize as planned. The building was intended to serve as a hub for higher education, featuring a large auditorium and banquet facilities. Although the cornerstone was delayed until 1921, the efforts to establish this memorial reflect the enduring legacy of Washington's vision for American education. Today, the funds raised contribute to the George Washington University, making it a significant historical and educational landmark in Washington, D.C.
