Demolition of the original Pennsylvania Station

New York's original Pennsylvania Station, an ornate Beaux-Arts building opened in 1910, was demolished in 1963 to make way for the current underground Penn Station and the above-ground Madison Square Garden complex. The demolition removed the above-ground headhouse and train sheds that once occupied the site. The loss of the landmarked station is widely credited with helping spur the modern historic preservation movement in New York City and contributed to the passage of the 1965 Landmarks Law.
