Eastern State Penitentiary and Al Capone's incarceration

Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 as an early model of the separate system of incarceration and later became a maximum-security prison. Noted gangster Al Capone was held briefly at Eastern State in 1929 after his arrest in Philadelphia before being transferred elsewhere. The prison closed in 1971 and is now a historic site and museum documenting its penal history.
