Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks)

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, commonly known as the Ballard Locks, opened in 1917 as part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal project to connect Lake Washington and Lake Union with Puget Sound. The locks permit vessels to transit between salt and freshwater and include a fish ladder built to allow migrating salmon passage. The complex has long served both commercial and recreational navigation in Seattle.
