Stephenson House (University of Toronto)

Stephenson House, located at 63-65 Charles Street West, was a unique community involvement residence at Victoria University, University of Toronto, hosting ten undergraduate students annually until 2010. Established in 1940, it aimed to foster a cooperative living environment focused on community service and personal responsibility. The house, a City of Toronto Heritage Property built in 1884, was the last remaining Victorian home on Charles Street. Over the years, it evolved from a Christian cooperative to an inclusive residence, welcoming both men and women. Residents shared responsibilities for maintenance and operations, supported by Victoria College to keep living costs low. The application process included open houses and dinners for prospective residents, emphasizing community engagement and collaboration.
