Witherspoon Building

The Witherspoon Building is a historic office structure located in Philadelphia's Market East neighborhood, designed by architect Joseph M. Huston and completed in 1896. This 11-story E-shaped building, made of steel, brick, and granite, features intricate terra cotta decorations and classical columns. It honors John Witherspoon, a notable figure in American history and former president of Princeton University. The building is adorned with sculptures by Alexander Stirling Calder, depicting prominent Presbyterians, although these were relocated in 1961. Recognized for its architectural significance, the Witherspoon Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, making it a noteworthy site for both tourists and researchers interested in American religious and architectural history.
