Golden Gate Bridge - 1937 opening and suicide-prevention project

The Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 27, 1937, as a 1.7-mile suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait and has since been an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco. Over many decades the bridge became a frequent site of suicide, which led the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District to approve a suicide-prevention net project. Construction of the stainless-steel net began in 2019 as a long-term effort to deter jumps, and the bridge remains managed by the District and open to the public for pedestrian and vehicle access.
