Bryant Cottage State Historic Site

The Bryant Cottage State Historic Site, located in Bement, Illinois, is a preserved four-room house built in 1856, showcasing pioneer architecture and its significance in the historic 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates. The site is linked to Francis E. Bryant, a local businessman and Democratic supporter of Senator Stephen A. Douglas, who famously debated Abraham Lincoln. Visitors can explore the cottage's history, including local folklore suggesting that negotiations for the debates occurred within its walls. The site was temporarily closed in 2008 but reopened in 2009 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
