Texas State Capitol Sunset Red Granite

The Texas State Capitol building is faced with Sunset Red granite quarried from the Granite Mountain/Marble Falls area and was completed in 1888 using that stone. The pinkish granite was chosen for its durability and distinctive color and distinguishes the Capitol from many other U.S. state capitols built of limestone. The granite blocks were transported to Austin in the late 19th century and the building remains noted for its stonework.
