Indianapolis Motor Speedway - The Brickyard

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 and was originally paved with approximately 3.2 million bricks, earning the nickname "The Brickyard." Most of the bricks were later covered with asphalt, but a one-yard strip of the original bricks remains exposed at the start/finish line. The speedway's grandstands, pagoda complex, and infield buildings have evolved over time but the brick legacy remains a defining architectural and historic feature of the site.
