Treasure Island (1939–40 Golden Gate International Exposition site)

Treasure Island is an artificial island in San Francisco Bay constructed in 1936–1937 to host the 1939–1940 Golden Gate International Exposition. After the exposition the island was used as a U.S. Naval Station during World War II and in subsequent decades; many mid-20th-century military buildings and some exposition-era structures remain. Treasure Island is administratively part of the city of San Francisco and has been the subject of ongoing redevelopment and historic-preservation efforts.
