Emancipation Park (site of Houston Juneteenth celebrations)

Emancipation Park was purchased in 1872 by formerly enslaved Black residents of Houston to provide a place to celebrate Juneteenth. It is the oldest park in Houston bought by African Americans and has served historically as a community gathering place. The park contains memorials and hosts annual Juneteenth events and community programming. It underwent major renovation and restoration in the 2010s to preserve its historic role in Houston’s Black community.
