James Lick Mansion

The James Lick Mansion, located in Santa Clara, California, is a historic estate once owned by James Lick, the wealthiest man in California at his death in 1876. This Italianate Victorian mansion, built between 1858 and 1860, features exquisite native redwood construction and imported marble fireplaces in its 24 rooms. The estate, which includes a brick granary and millpond from Lick's original mill, reflects a rich agricultural history, including pioneering horticultural techniques. Although the grounds are currently privately owned and closed to the public, they remain an important historic resource, with a right of public access disputed by the City of Santa Clara.
