South Mountain Park archaeological resources

South Mountain Park and Preserve contains hundreds of documented archaeological sites, including Hohokam-era villages, rock shelters, and petroglyph panels, recorded by the City of Phoenix. Archaeologists have identified remains of prehistoric habitation and trails across the park that reflect long-term use of the area by indigenous peoples. The park is managed with consideration for protecting these archaeological resources during recreation and land management activities.
