Zero Milestone on the Ellipse

The Zero Milestone, dedicated in 1923 and located on the Ellipse south of the White House, was intended as the point from which road distances from Washington, D.C., would be measured. The stone marker is inscribed with text indicating its purpose as a point of measurement for distances to be set off from the city, and it remains a distinct, single monument on the President's Park landscape. The marker is part of the historic fabric of the Ellipse and White House grounds.
