Forestiere Underground Gardens

The Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno, California, are a remarkable series of subterranean structures created by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere over 40 years. Built from 1906 to 1946, these gardens feature 65 rooms, including bedrooms, a kitchen, and a fishpond, all intricately designed without blueprints. Forestiere ingeniously utilized the underground environment to cultivate a variety of fruit trees, protected from frost and extreme heat. The gardens, which showcase unique vernacular architecture, were recognized as a historic place in 1977 and continue to be operated by the Forestiere family.
