Fort Independence (Castle Island) lookout parapets

Fort Independence on Castle Island is a granite fortification whose present structure dates to the early-to-mid 19th century; its bastions, walls, and parapets were built to provide lookout positions and artillery coverage of approaches to Boston Harbor. The site historically functioned as a coastal defense and observation point guarding South Boston Harbor; remains of sentry positions and walkways are visible to visitors. The fort is managed as a public historic site by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
