Laurel Hill Cemetery (rural cemetery movement)

Founded in 1836 as one of the earliest rural or garden cemeteries in the United States, Laurel Hill Cemetery was laid out to combine picturesque landscape design with commemorative architecture. The site contains numerous 19th-century funerary monuments, mausoleums, and sculptural memorials that illustrate Victorian-era burial practices and tastes. Laurel Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized for its historic landscape and architectural features.
