Apollo Theater and Amateur Night

The Apollo Theater in Harlem has hosted its long-running 'Amateur Night' competition since 1934, a program credited with helping launch the careers of performers such as Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown. Located on West 125th Street, the Apollo became a central performance venue for African American music across jazz, R&B, soul, and later hip-hop. After periods of decline, the theater was restored and reopened in the 1980s and continues to operate as a major cultural institution hosting concerts, community programs, and televised events.
