Slave Houses, Gregg Plantation

The Slave Houses at Gregg Plantation, located on the campus of Francis Marion University in South Carolina, are two historic log cabins that serve as a poignant reminder of the region's past. Built before 1831 and occupied until the early 1950s, these cabins housed up to 14 individuals each, showcasing the cramped living conditions of enslaved people. Constructed from untreated longleaf pine, the cabins reflect the craftsmanship of their builders. Although originally eight cabins existed, only these two remain, having been relocated twice, with significant historical preservation efforts undertaken. They were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and offer visitors a glimpse into the living conditions of their original inhabitants, making them a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American history.
