United States Post Office and Sub-Treasury Building (Boston)

The United States Post Office and Sub-Treasury Building, demolished in 1929, was a significant architectural landmark in Boston, Massachusetts, representing the city's first federally owned post office. Constructed in the late 19th century, it was designed in the Second Empire style and featured a distinctive Mansard roof. The building's history includes its survival of the Great Boston Fire of 1872 and subsequent expansion, which transformed Post Office Square into a hub of Victorian architecture. By the early 20th century, the building was deemed inadequate for federal needs, leading to its demolition and replacement by a modern structure. Notably, two large statues by renowned sculptor Daniel Chester French were preserved and relocated to Franklin Park, serving as a reminder of the building's historical significance.
