Eastern State Penitentiary (historic prison and art site)

Eastern State Penitentiary, opened in 1829 and operational as a prison until 1971, is notable for its radial cellblock design and its role in the history of American penology. The ruin-like structure on Fairmount has been preserved as a museum and historic site and regularly hosts rotating public art installations and exhibitions within its cellblocks. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a frequent venue for large-scale, site-specific artworks.
