St. Elizabeths Hospital West Campus (long-vacant Kirkbride complex)

St. Elizabeths Hospital was established by Congress in 1855 and its campus includes a 19th-century Kirkbride-plan hospital complex. Many West Campus buildings fell into long-term vacancy and deterioration in the late 20th century before federal redevelopment plans in the 21st century. Portions of the larger campus were later rehabilitated for federal use while other historic structures remained vacant or underused during redevelopment phases.
