1985 MOVE bombing and resulting fire

On May 13, 1985, the Philadelphia Police Department dropped an explosive device on the occupied MOVE rowhouse at 6221 Osage Avenue. The device ignited a fire that killed 11 people, including five children, and destroyed 61 neighboring houses. The city's decision to use the bomb and its handling of the fire prompted widespread criticism, multiple investigations, and enduring controversy. A 1986 grand jury declined to indict city officials in connection with the incident.
