Ramkraal Prison

Ramkraal Prison, built in 1893 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, was established to address the rising crime rate following the arrival of the railway. The prison's architecture features a ring wall with watchtowers and was constructed from sandstone. Although conditions improved from the previous prison, corporal punishment and harsh living conditions persisted, particularly for black prisoners. Registered as a national monument in 1990, the site has faced neglect and proposals for conversion into a museum. Today, it stands as a historical testament to the region's past, attracting interest from tourists and researchers alike.
