The Alamo (Mission San Antonio de Valero)

Mission San Antonio de Valero, known as the Alamo, was founded in 1718 as a Spanish mission and later converted to a military compound; its surviving church and long barracks are mission-era masonry structures. The site was the location of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. The remaining walls and historic buildings are documented examples of 18th-century mission construction and urban fortification in San Antonio.
