Congress Avenue axis and the Texas State Capitol

Edwin Waller's 1839 plat established Congress Avenue as Austin's principal north-south axis, intended to terminate at a reserved public site at the north end of the plan. The Texas State Capitol now stands at the north end of that original axis, occupying the site aligned by the 1839 survey. Congress Avenue and the Capitol grounds reflect the spatial intent of Austin's original city survey.
