James S. Thompson House

The James S. Thompson House, located near New Boston in Mercer County, Illinois, is a historic Italianate-style home built in 1862 by local businessman James S. Thompson. This two-story brick house features a distinctive front gabled roof and a cupola, with a well-preserved layout that includes four rooms on each floor. The property also boasts several outbuildings, including a wash house and a wooden barn, all constructed around the same time. After Thompson's death in 1868, the house was rented and later purchased by Stanton V. Prentiss. In 2002, the house and its outbuildings were recognized for their historical significance by being added to the National Register of Historic Places, making it an interesting site for tourists and researchers alike.
