Lord Simcoe Hotel

The Lord Simcoe Hotel, a notable high-rise in Toronto, Ontario, was constructed in 1956 and designed by architects Henry T. Langston and Peter Dickinson. Named after John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, the hotel featured a modernist design with 20 stories of concrete and glass. Despite its prominent location at the corner of King Street and University Avenue, it struggled to compete with newer hotels due to outdated amenities, including the absence of central air conditioning and sufficient convention space. The hotel closed in 1979 and was demolished in 1981, making way for the Sun Life Centre East Tower in 1984. Its brief history reflects the evolving landscape of Toronto's hospitality industry.
