The Phillips Collection, founded by Duncan Phillips

The Phillips Collection, located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, was founded by art collector Duncan Phillips in 1921 and is widely described as America’s first museum of modern art. The museum began in the Phillips family home and now houses a permanent collection and rotating exhibitions that document modern and contemporary artists. The institution continues to interpret Duncan Phillips's vision for connoisseurship and modern art education in Washington, D.C.
