Ryman Auditorium's origin as a tabernacle

Ryman Auditorium was completed in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, funded by riverboat captain Thomas G. Ryman and originally intended for religious revival meetings. Over time the building became a secular performance venue and later served as the longtime home of the Grand Ole Opry. The auditorium is preserved as a historic performance hall and continues to present concerts and tours.
