Fulton Mansion Historical Site

The Fulton Mansion State Historic Site, located in Fulton, Texas, is a remarkable example of Second Empire architecture and one of the earliest of its kind in the state. Built between 1874 and 1877 by Colonel George Ware Fulton and Harriet Gillette Smith, this four-story residence, known as 'Oakhurst,' was equipped with modern amenities for its time, including indoor plumbing, gas lighting, and central heating. The mansion has a rich history, having changed ownership several times before being purchased by the state in 1976. It was restored and opened to the public in 1983 and is now operated by the Texas Historical Commission. Visitors can explore its beautifully restored interiors and learn about its significance in Texas history.
