White House - Executive Order on Cybersecurity (EO 13636)

On February 12, 2013 President Barack Obama signed Executive Order 13636, 'Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity,' at the White House. The order directed the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop a voluntary Cybersecurity Framework to reduce cyber risks to critical infrastructure and called for increased information sharing between government and the private sector. The EO is frequently cited in U.S. policy discussions about responses to major cyber intrusions and ransomware incidents.
