James Newell Barn

The James Newell Barn, once a historic landmark in Washington Township near Cedar Falls, Iowa, was built in 1845 by the area's first settler, James Newell. This two-story barn, constructed on a native limestone foundation and featuring black walnut timber, reflects the rich history of early American settlement. The site, known as Turkey Foot Forks due to its unique geographical shape resembling a wild turkey's foot, was recognized for its historical significance by being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, although it was removed in 2022. This location offers a glimpse into the early agricultural practices and settlement patterns of the region.
