Buena Vista Cafe and Irish Coffee

The Buena Vista Cafe at Fisherman's Wharf is widely credited with popularizing Irish coffee in the United States after travel writer Stanton Delaplane and bartender Jack Koeppler helped introduce the drink there in 1952. The cafe has continuously prepared and served its version of Irish coffee since that time and remains a long-standing local and tourist attraction. It occupies a historic storefront near the northern waterfront and is known for its theatrical preparation of the beverage.
