Freer Gallery of Art (Charles A. Platt Beaux-Arts museum)

Designed by architect Charles A. Platt and completed in 1923, the Freer Gallery of Art was built to house Charles Lang Freer's collection and reflects Beaux-Arts principles of symmetry, axial planning, and classical ornament. The limestone-faced building and its controlled-gallery lighting exemplify early-20th-century museum design approaches for the careful display of Asian and American art collections. The Freer remains part of the Smithsonian Institution's museum complex on the National Mall.
