The Heidelberg Project (public art that spread widely online)

The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor community art environment created by artist Tyree Guyton beginning in 1986, transforming houses and lots on Heidelberg Street with painted façades and found-object installations. Photographs and stories about the project have been widely circulated on social media and in online articles, making it one of Detroit’s most recognizable internet-famous public artworks. The project has attracted international visitors and media attention while undergoing periods of restoration and controversy over removal of some installations. It continues to function as a community art site and cultural attraction.
