Rothko Chapel

The Rothko Chapel, completed in 1971 and commissioned by Dominique and John de Menil, is a non-denominational chapel and an international center for interfaith reflection. Its interior contains fourteen large, dark-hued paintings by Mark Rothko that were created specifically for the space and arranged to produce a contemplative environment. The building is a simple, windowless brick structure that encloses the painted chapel and an adjoining brick courtyard used for gatherings and meditation.
